The Gullah quilting tradition is a creolized form of African textile work, mixed with the Southern white woman's tradition of quilting. What resulted was a unique Gullah art form. A quilt can been seen hanging on the porch of this house, around 1900 in Georgetown County, north of Charleston.

Alfred Graham, the first teacher of basketry at Penn, brought the craft from Africa as a boy, 1909.
The Penn School taught quilt making, along with basket making and other vocational skills as income-earning crafts. Originating in African traditions and passed down from generation to generation, the baskets were both functional (see the rice winnowing basket in "Growing Food") and an art form.
